William Gass: Middle C

At 88, St. Louis literary eminence William Gass is still going strong. The longtime Washington University professor can still be spotted on campus or filling his cart at the annual Greater St. Louis Book Fair. Readers of his 2012 essay collection, Life Sentences, were treated to another harvest of Gass’s characteristically sharp judgments, uncommon eloquence, and spiky wit.

Now there is more Gass on the way: a new novel, Middle C, his first since The Tunnel in 1995, will be published by Knopf on March 12. A starred review in Publisher’s Weekly calls it “crazily rich with thought” and “the unprecedented work of a master.”

Gass will be reading from the new novel on publication day at Left Bank Books in the Central West End.
